"You've gotta fancy 'em. Never mind love. Love can fuck off. If you fancy him, there's blood, there's a hard-on. If you just love him, no blood."
Stuart Jones (UK: Out of the Closet, Into the Fire)

Love was an intense feeling of attachment to someone, romantic or sexual. Stuart Jones completely separated love from sex; (UK: Out of the Closet, Into the Fire) Justin Taylor, on the other hand, fell in love with Brian Kinney after having sex with him, (US: Premiere, Queer, There and Everywhere) and later described the moment to Brian as having made love. (US: Just a Little Help) The same happened to Daphne Chanders; after Justin took her virginity as a favor, Daphne fell in love with him, but he held back and she eventually got over him. According to Lindsay Peterson, "it's not so easy for most women to separate sex and love as it is for a man"; Melanie found this a bad trait of men, while Justin found it weird how attached women got to their sex partners. (US: Good Grief) The way Michael Novotny put it, regardless of sexual orientation, "women know how to commit to each other, men don't." (US: No Bris, No Shirt, No Service)

Brian was initially of the opinion that love was something ultimately negative "that straight people tell themselves they're in, so they can get laid", and told Justin, "I don't believe in love; I believe in fucking." (US: Queer, There and Everywhere) After several years of an on-off relationship with Justin — notably the first person he had sex with more than once — (US: Ted's Not Dead, Big Fucking Mouth) and after thinking the worst for Justin when Babylon was bombed and he was inside, Brian finally admitted his love for his long-time boyfriend, (US: I Love You) and asked him to marry him. (US: Fuckin' Revenge) When Justin realised that Brian was just trying to make him happy, and Brian realised that Justin would be giving up his art career for him, the two agreed to at least temporarily call off the wedding, Justin saying, "We don't need rings or vows to prove that we love each other." (US: We Will Survive)
